A Cruise Junkie is born

My next trip wouldn’t come for over a decade. I got married shortly after graduating high school, became a mom. I was blessed to be a stay at home mom when my children were small. I home-schooled my son 1st through 5th grade and my daughter 1st through 3rd grade. When they went back into the public school system, I went back to work.

The first time in over 13 years, I wasn’t working from home. My debut back into the work force was with On Hold Marketing as a Customer Service Rep. I was there for almost 5 years. During my time there, Good Morning America was having a cubical contest. Well, I just so happen to be working in a cubical, so me and my cube-mate decided to enter the contest. We both wanted to go on a cruise and knew we never would so that was the theme.

My cubical was covered in hula skirts, sunglasses, lays and even my photos frames were tropical. My cube-mate covered her cubical in different colors of blue like the ocean and the sky. One the front of our cubical we took photos of everyone in the office and put them in port-holes. We added tropical plants, hide a few lizards and titled it, “Ship Wrecked at On-Hold”.

The contest directions was to send in photos and if you were a finalist, send in a video to air later on the show. We were so confident we would be a finalist, we sent the video with the photos, and waited. It was a few weeks later, we got a call from one of the owners of On Hold, Gary. He said he got a call from Good Morning America, we were in the top 3. He told us, they would be asking what motivated the decor of our cubicles. We explained the theme was our very own little cruise ship since we could afford to go on a real one.

The day came to find out who won. Our video was aired on Good Morning America, however, we didn’t get to see it here because of a “Special Report”. We were very upset, but family members in other time zones saw it. We didn’t win the contest, we got second place. But what a fun ride.

I believe it was the next week, Gary came in and went straight to the Customer Service Manager’s office and closed the door. As soon as he left, we were all called into her office. We didn’t know what just happen and it didn’t appear to be good. She asked for the door to be closed and then said, well ladies . . . do you think you can be ready to go on a cruise in a few weeks? Everyones jaws hit the floor!! Yes!! Yes we can be ready. Gary had made arrangements for all the ladies in the office to go on a cruise!!

It was the first cruise for all of us and we had a blast. We went on a 4 day cruise with Carnival to Cozumel. I was hooked! I couldn’t wait to do it again but wasn’t sure I’d be able to. We didn’t have a lot of money so going on vacation was not a priority. After a few years, Carnival called . . .
